Capabilities and Methods for GPS, Geological GIS, and 3D Mapping

Equipment and Software
GPS: Trimble Geo 7 with laser range finder, Zephyr 2 geodetic antenna, range pole, roof magnetic mount, survey tapes (Figs 1, 2). Trimble Terrasync Pro and Pathfinder Office software.
GIS and Mapping: ESRI’s ArcGIS, Blue Marble Geographic Global Mapper, Google Earth Pro, and Insight’s Subsurface Viewer MX.

Geospatial Data Collection
To obtain the geospatial data to map geologic information, we use Trimble’s Geo7. To achieve sub-foot accuracy horizontally and sub-meter accuracy vertically, ~30 sec is needed at each station. For motorized surveys, we use geodetic antenna with sub-meter horizontal accuracy.

GIS and 3D Mapping
For a GIS and to produce maps, we use ArcGIS and so follow ArcGIS protocols. For a project area, we ingest pertinent framework data (e.g., topography, man-made features) into appropriate GIS layers, add our information, interpretations, analysis. and then output maps in the required format.
Vertical cross-sections and all 3D modeling mapping are done in Subsurface Viewer MX (Fig. 3).
